I would say give him some slack, except someone did just die that Friday, so it was still poor timing nonetheless.

Someone decided to use it, specifically —- but depending on when they did it, it might have been before they knew what was going to happen after someone died.

... That's not actually a bad idea. Some way of marking a killer so it's easier to track them would be pretty useful.

It would have to be something they couldn't just erase evidence of, so leaving stuff on the scene is more difficult.
